SPIDER-Y thanks long-term supporters!
The Management Committee and members welcomed Leeds Community Foundation (LCF) Chief Executive, Sally-Anne Greenfield and Jimbo’s Fund representative Linda Gumby, who have been the main supporters of SPIDER-Y since our inception 2007 to our first home game of the season.
LCF, a local grant-making charity, were on hand in the early days to support Founders Michael Yates, John Sharp and Chris Smith to get the charity up and running, helping out with our first grant application for funding for our team Minibus back in 2009. Since then LCF have assisted our current Management with successful applications to other funders.
Chairman Andy Gardner said: “Without support from charities and organisations we would not be able to survive. We have collaborated over the years with Comic Relief and Sport Relief completing many a Sport Relief mile in and around Leeds, and featuring in video campaigns for Comic Relief.
Over the last five years SPIDER-Y has received £60,000 in funding from Jimbo’s Fund, which is managed by LCF and has seen our club grow from 10 players, one development team in 2010 to 60 players, six wheelchair basketball teams and one wheelchair rugby league team in 2015.
We wanted to say thank you to LCF and Jimbo’s Fund for their support. With LCF celebrating their 10th anniversary and having worked with Jimbo’s Fund for five years we thought there was no better way to say thanks than to present them with a number 10 and number 5 team shirt.”
Leeds Spiders Wheelchair Basketball represent Leeds at the highest level in wheelchair basketball, with their first season in the British Wheelchair Basketball Associations Premier League, Division 3 North, Women’s Division 2, Under 19s, Under 15s and a new development team.
Leeds Rhinos Wheelchair Rugby League finished the RFL Wheelchair Rugby League National League Championship in 5th place last season and also made it to the semi-final of the Challenge Cup in 2015. Their players and Management also represented England in the last two years and have added silverware to the cabinet including the 4 Nations, European Championship and the Kielty/Fassolette Trophy, the England/ French Test Match Cup.
